ESLI, in cooperation with the Jewish Museum in Prague, organized a project focused on the fate of children in the Holocaust. thefocal point was the story of Petr Ginz, a talented Jewish boy imprisoned in the Terezín Ghetto where he founded and produced the magazine Vedem. He wrote stories, kept a diary, and drew many pictures that we might call “visionary” today for their motifs of outer-space at a time when space exploration did not exist. One of Petr’s drawings was taken onto the space shuttle Columbia in 2003 by Israel’s first astronaut Ilan Ramon. The drawing circled the globe after Columbia tragically broke apart during re-entry. Petr’s story is the subject of Sandra Wilson’s documentary film The Last Flight of Petr Ginz, which was screened as part of the project in Prague’s Spanish Synagogue. Attending the screening were Karel Schwarzenberg, Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, Pierre Levy, French Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Norman Eisen, U.S. Ambassador to the Czech Republic, and many other prominent Czech public figures. The project was sponsored by OPONA (The Curtain), a Czech public benefit corporation.
