Dear Colleagues,
Implementing the decision of the participants of the International Conference on Welfare for Holocaust Survivors and Other victims of Nazi persecution, the European Shoah Legacy Institute prepared an appeal to the European Commission on behalf of civil society to appoint a Special Coordinator on Holocaust Issues.
The Special Coordinator would dedicate efforts in co-operation with EU institutions to monitor, provide technical guidance and advocate (for) the implementation of the Terezin Declaration and curbing the Anti-Semitism according to the Berlin Declaration, the Stockholm Declaration and the Article 13 of the European Commission Treaty, which commit Member States to uphold the highest standards of human rights and non-discrimination, as well as the European Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Coordinator would work in cooperation with civil society and national Special Envoys on anti-Semitism and Holocaust Issues, according to the existing commitments of the European Commission and the relevant European Parliament Resolutions.
We sincerely hope that the European Commission Coordinator on Holocaust Issues would be critical in dealing with anti-Semitism and the Terezin Declaration, in particular, financial support to civil society organizations providing care to Holocaust survivors and other victims of Nazi persecution, restitution issues and the recovery of looted art, Holocaust education, research and remembrance.
If you support the appeal to the European Commission on appointing the Coordinator on Holocaust Issues, please fill out the online petition by 18:00, 25th September 2015 The appeal will be send to the European Commission on 29 September 2015. We will also present this appeal at the Colloquium on Anti-Semitism and hatred crimes on 1-2 October 2015 in Brussels.
