Dutch Jewish Community Compensated by Amsterdam Municipality

ESLI congratulates the Amsterdam municipality and its mayor, Eberhanrd van der Laan, for the recent decision to donate 10 million Euros as compensation for the taxes, bills and fines imposed on Holocaust survivors upon their return to the Netherlands after the Second World War. A 2014 study revealed over 200 cases of citizens returning from camps or hiding being required to pay the municipality, even when their homes were occupied in their absence. The municipality’s donation will go towards Jewish community projects, and shows a recognition of the injustice that was faced by many Dutch Jews returning to their homes after the war.
